Looking for a fun way to work on letter identification? Try having a letter popcorn party! The setup takes a little time, but it can be used over and over again.
Here’s what we did… We started with our “The Popcorn Book” by Tomie dePaola. This book is a bit higher level, jam packed with the history of popcorn, but Olivia loved the pictures and we talked through some of the higher level ideas. Then we popped some popcorn (snacking while learning is always extra motivating)!
I separated a popcorn bowl for snacking and put the uppercase letters in the larger popcorn bowl. Then we layed out the lower case letters on the table. Olivia picked an uppercase letter, named the letter, and tried to find its lowercase match on the table. Since we did the entire alphabet, we took turns playing. There are a lot of ways to modify this game. You can just use the letters in your child’s name to start. Or just start with the upper or lowercase letters. Set it up and when your child starts to lose focus, put it away for another day and enjoy the popcorn!
