There isn’t much of a storyline to “My First Book of Girl Power” by Julie Merberg, but it’s a great introduction to the genre of graphic novels and comic books while using empowering adjectives to describe strong women. This book does a great job of highlighting strong and smart female heroines – which is a welcome contrast to the traditional fairy tale princesses.
After reading the book and talking about each heroine, it’s always fun to get a little messy. To extend the activity we made our own Supergirl to hang up. Just cut out a blue shirt, red rectangle, and let your preschoolers hand-prints add the finishing touch! We also used yellow and red construction paper to make a few Wonder Woman headbands, but we happened to get a hand-me-down costume which made reading the book a touch more fun!
