You and your preschoolers will love the story, “Press Here” by Herve Tullet. “Turn the book sideways” and watch what happens to the dots – it’s interactive without a device! And it’s great to get your little one following simple one-step directions.
To follow up we had to bring the dots to life. Perfect for teaching counting, colors, and sorting – my little one loved this activity because she liked rolling the dice (it’s the simple things, right?).
Here’s what you do:
1. Use an organizer (a plastic chip & dip tray works perfectly) to sort 6 different colored pom pom balls.
2. Set out 6 white plates with color labels to match the pom pom balls. Or you can write the color names with markers on the white plates. For little learners, I would suggest matching the colors with the color names (write the word yellow with yellow marker, blue with blue marker rather than just writing them all in black).
3. To start, have your preschooler pick their first color.
4. Roll the dice and count out that many pom pom balls.
5. Place the pom pom balls on the matching color plate.
6. Repeat with a new color.
As a variation, your preschool can also use tweezers to pick up each pom pom. My little one loves trying to use the tweezers and it’s great for building those fine motor muscles! You can see a video of her counting in the Instagram post.
Little learners today, leaders tomorrow… happy creating!
