These classic DIY birdfeeders will bring you back to your childhood. They are easy for little hands to complete independently and there’s a good chance you already have everything you need at home.
We started this activity by reading the story “Are You My Mother?” by P.D. Eastman. I picked this story to help my little one begin to make connections between herself, the text, and the world around her. Although fictional, the storyline is very relatable for preschoolers. After reading the story, we talked about how the Mama bird in the story went to look for food for her baby bird.
I asked my little one how she thinks birds get food and what birds might eat. Then we discussed how it’s harder for birds to find food in colder weather, but we can help! We can make a bird feeder with seeds to help the mama bird find food for her baby bird. After this, my little one was anxious to get started on her feeder!
To make the feeders, cut the paper towel roll in half. Have your preschooler cover both rolls with a layer of peanut butter. Then roll the sticky tubes over a plate of birdseed. Finally, loop a string or twine through the top. Easy peasy!
My preschooler was thrilled to hang it herself on a small bush by our house. She watched for a while, hoping to spot the mama bird coming for food.
Little learners today, leaders tomorrow…..happy creating!
